Consumer apps often hide important details behind short labels such as “free trial,” “premium,” “personalized,” “encrypted” or “private.” This glossary explains common subscription, privacy, security, permissions and account terms so readers can understand what they are agreeing to before installing or paying for an app.
Subscription and Billing
Free Trial
A temporary period of access offered at no charge. Many free trials convert automatically to a paid subscription unless canceled before the renewal date.
Auto-Renewal
A billing setting that renews a subscription automatically at the end of each term.
Monthly vs Annual Plan
Monthly plans renew every month; annual plans generally charge for a longer period upfront. Annual plans may have a lower effective monthly cost but less flexibility.
In-App Purchase
A purchase made inside an app for features, content, credits or subscriptions.
Freemium
A model where basic functionality is free while advanced features require payment.
Lifetime Access
A one-time purchase promising ongoing access under specified terms. “Lifetime” should be interpreted according to the product’s actual terms rather than assuming perpetual operation of the service.
Privacy and Data
Personal Data
Information that identifies or can reasonably be linked to an individual, depending on the applicable legal definition.
Sensitive Data
Data categories that may receive additional legal or security protections, such as precise location, health information, financial information or biometric data.
Data Controller
An organization that determines why and how personal data is processed under applicable privacy frameworks.
Data Processor
An organization that processes personal data on behalf of another organization.
Data Retention
The period for which an app or service keeps user data.
Data Deletion
The process of removing user data from active systems, subject to legal, technical or backup-related retention rules.
Data Sharing
Providing data to another organization, service provider, advertiser, analytics platform or partner. “Sharing” may have different legal meanings depending on jurisdiction.
Third-Party SDK
Software from another company embedded inside an app for functions such as analytics, advertising, payments, crash reporting or authentication.
Security
Encryption in Transit
Protection applied while data moves between devices and servers.
Encryption at Rest
Protection applied to stored data.
End-to-End Encryption
An architecture where only the communicating endpoints are intended to have access to the plaintext content. The exact implementation and metadata handling still matter.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
An account-security method requiring more than one authentication factor.
Passkey
A modern sign-in credential designed to replace or reduce reliance on passwords, typically using device-based cryptography.
Security Breach
An incident in which unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction of data occurs or is suspected.
Permissions and Tracking
App Permission
Access an app requests to device functions or data, such as contacts, microphone, camera, photos, notifications or location.
Precise Location
Fine-grained geographic location data that can identify a user’s position with much greater accuracy than approximate location.
Tracking
Collection or linking of user activity across apps, websites, devices or services for purposes such as advertising, analytics or personalization.
Personalization
Adapting content, recommendations, messages or experiences based on user data or behavior.
Advertising ID
A device- or platform-level identifier historically used to support advertising measurement or targeting, subject to platform controls and privacy settings.
Accounts and Access
Account Recovery
The process used to regain access after losing a password, device or authentication method.
Single Sign-On
Signing into one service using an identity from another provider, such as Apple, Google or a workplace identity system.
Guest Mode
Using an app without creating a full account. Guest mode may limit features or affect whether data can be synced or recovered.
Account Deletion
Closing an account and triggering the app’s deletion or retention process for associated data.
How to Use This Glossary
Before subscribing, compare the app’s pricing screen with its terms, privacy policy and account settings. Terms such as “private,” “encrypted,” “free” and “cancel anytime” can be technically true while still carrying important conditions.
